Lovable vs Bolt: Which Should You Pick in 2026?

Updated Prices checked

The short version

Choose Bolt if you can read code and want the fastest scaffold in any web framework, with a terminal in the tab. Choose Lovable if you want the best-looking app from the fewest prompts, a managed backend and GitHub sync, and never intend to open the code. Bolt is faster and more flexible; Lovable is more polished and more forgiving.

If you want the app and to understand it, at a lower price per credit, the third option at the end is built for that.

What Coddy Build is

Lovable or Bolt

Lovable and Bolt.new arrived within weeks of each other in late 2024. Bolt, from StackBlitz, runs a real Node.js environment inside the browser tab, so the AI writes and runs your app with no server and the preview appears in seconds. Lovable, from Stockholm, generates a polished React app on a managed Supabase called Lovable Cloud and is built so you never need to see the code.

We make Coddy Build, a third builder in the same market. The table below has no Coddy column; the third option appears only at the end.

Pricing: credits against tokens

Both entry plans cost $25 a month. Lovable Pro gives 100 credits that roll over while the subscription is active and expire two months after issue, and a request costs about half a credit for a small change to 1.7 for a feature that touches several files, so credits go further when you ask for less at a time. Since August 2026 hosting and database usage share the same balance, and an app at zero pauses. Business is $50 for the same credits plus SSO and roles.

Bolt Pro gives 10M tokens with no daily cap, and unused tokens roll over for a month. Tokens count everything the model reads and writes, so a small project is cheap to iterate on and a large one gets more expensive per turn as the model re-reads more of it. Teams is $30 a month per member.

On free tiers Bolt looks more generous, 300K tokens a day against 5 credits, and both run out in the same place: the third fix of a stubborn bug.

Speed and design

Bolt is faster. The app runs in your browser, so the first preview appears in seconds and every edit lands at once. Lovable takes longer and, in our view, comes back with the better-looking page; its first draft of a landing page or dashboard needs fewer follow-up prompts.

Which matters more depends on who finishes the app. A developer who will polish in their own editor wants Bolt's speed and export. A founder who will ship what the tool produced wants Lovable's design.

Who should pick Bolt

  • Developers who want the fastest scaffold and a terminal in the same tab.
  • Anyone who needs Vue, Svelte, Astro or a mobile app through Expo.
  • People who want a choice of backend provider, or value token rollover on a quiet month.

Who should pick Lovable

  • Founders and designers who want the best-looking result with the fewest prompts.
  • Anyone who will never open the code and wants a managed backend with nothing to configure.
  • Teams, since every plan includes unlimited members.
  • People who prefer a credit budget to a token meter.

What neither of them does

Bolt shows you the code and assumes you can read it. Lovable hides the code and assumes you never want to. Neither explains what it just did in words a beginner can follow, and both bill a debugging loop at the same rate as new features.

Coddy Build comes from the team behind Coddy, where people learn to code by writing it. Every turn ends with a plain-English summary of what changed and why, unfamiliar terms get concept cards, and the concepts link to courses. Each app gets its own Supabase you can browse, Builder plans start at $20 a month for 100 credits, each shown after every turn, publishing is free, and it runs on a phone. It is behind Bolt on speed, frameworks and export, and behind Lovable on first-render design and team features.

A third option: the builder that explains what it builds

Coddy Build gives you the same chat-to-app loop as Lovable and Bolt, with the code, the database and the reasoning in view. See the Lovable review and the Bolt review for the tables against Coddy Build, or start with the free tier.

Lovable vs Bolt FAQ

Which is better, Lovable or Bolt?
Bolt for developers who want speed, any web framework and a terminal in the tab. Lovable for non-developers who want the best-looking app from a chat with a managed backend and GitHub sync. Neither is designed to teach you what it built.
Is Bolt cheaper than Lovable?
Both entry plans are $25 a month. Both allowances roll over: Bolt's Pro tokens for one month, Lovable's monthly credits until two months after issue. Bolt's tokens go further on small projects; Lovable's credits are priced by request complexity. On a large project Bolt gets more expensive per turn.
Which is faster, Lovable or Bolt?
Bolt. The app runs inside your browser tab, so the first preview appears in seconds and edits are instant. Lovable renders in a cloud sandbox, takes longer, and usually comes back better designed.
Which has the better free plan, Lovable or Bolt?
Bolt's looks bigger: 300K tokens a day and 1M a month with hosting and databases included, against Lovable's 5 build credits a day up to 30 a month. In practice both run out on the same stuck bug; Bolt's resets faster.
Can you export code from Lovable and Bolt?
Yes, both. Lovable has two-way GitHub sync on every plan; Bolt exports to GitHub and downloads a ZIP, and its editor and terminal are open in the tab.
Which should a beginner choose, Lovable or Bolt?
Lovable is easier and looks better sooner; Bolt expects you to read code when something breaks. If the goal is to understand the app, Coddy Build is the option designed for that.
Is there a Lovable or Bolt alternative that explains the code?
Coddy Build, from the team behind the Coddy learning platform. Every change comes with a plain-English summary, unfamiliar terms get concept cards linking to courses, and the app's own Supabase is browsable in the workspace. Publishing is free.
Can I move a project between Lovable and Bolt?
Not by import. Both export to GitHub, so a Lovable React app can be pulled into Bolt as a repository; going the other way means describing the app to Lovable again and pasting components.
