Base44 vs Lovable: Which Should You Choose in 2026?
The short version
Choose Base44 for a business tool where you never want to think about infrastructure: database, accounts and hosting are all inside it. Choose Lovable for a product you want to look finished and hand to a developer later: better design, GitHub sync, Figma import and a managed Supabase. Neither explains what it built.

Base44 or Lovable
Base44 and Lovable are the two chat-to-app builders most often shortlisted together, and they solve the same problem from opposite ends. Base44, owned by Wix, bundles the whole backend inside the product so there is nothing to connect. Lovable, from Stockholm, generates a polished React app on a managed Supabase called Lovable Cloud and makes the code easy to take away.

Pricing: a message against a credit
Base44 charges message credits, and says usage varies by the action and the AI model you pick. Starter is $16 a month billed yearly for 100 messages, Builder $40 for 250, Pro $80 for 500 and Elite $160 for 1,200, and the annual rate is a fifth off, so monthly billing costs about a quarter more. The allowance is a cap, and a correction spends credits like a feature.
Lovable charges by complexity: Pro is $25 a month for 100 credits (about $21 annually) and Business $50 for the same credits plus governance. A small change costs about half a credit and a multi-file feature up to 1.7, so a careful builder gets more done per dollar than on Base44 and a careless one gets less. Since August 2026 hosting and database usage draw on the same balance, and an app that runs out is paused.
On free tiers the gap is large. Base44's 25 messages a month is a demo. Lovable's daily grant is a slow but real way to build.
Backend: built in, or managed and movable
Base44's backend is the reason to pick it. Tables, accounts, storage, email and AI calls all exist inside the product, nothing needs an API key, and an operations tool that would take a week of wiring elsewhere is a conversation. The cost is that the working app lives inside Base44: the code syncs out, the data and auth do not follow it easily.
Lovable Cloud is Supabase under a managed layer. Lovable apps are more portable, because a Supabase project is something any developer knows how to take over. The single balance is the risk: a heavy build month can pause a live app.
Who should pick Base44
- Operations teams and small businesses building internal tools, portals and simple SaaS.
- Anyone who wants zero infrastructure decisions and a capped monthly bill.
- Builders who want to choose the model, or need multi-user editing on the entry paid plan.
Who should pick Lovable
- Founders validating a product where the first impression matters.
- Anyone who will hand the code to a developer, sync it to GitHub or start from a Figma design.
- Teams, since every plan has unlimited members.
- People who want to build slowly on a free tier that renews every day.
What neither of them does
Neither Base44 nor Lovable tries to teach you anything. Both are built so you never open the code, and both succeed, which is why the day the AI gets stuck is a bad day: you have a working app and no map of it. Both bill the debugging loop at the same rate as new features.
