פרויקט צריך מקום אחד שמציין איך קוראים לו, מהי הגרסה שלו ואיך מפעילים אותו.

המקום הזה הוא package.json. "type": "module" מאפשר לקובצי .js להשתמש ב-import, scripts מגדיר שמות לפקודות של npm run, ו-dependencies מפרט את החבילות ש-npm install express מוריד אל node_modules. תוכנית יכולה לייבא את הקובץ עצמו:

with { type: 'json' } מציין ל-Node שהקובץ הוא נתונים ולא קוד. בלעדיו, Node מסרב לייבא אותו.

הפקודה version מדפיסה notes 1.2.0: את name ואת version שנקראו מתוך package.json.

הריצו את node notes.js version. לאחר מכן הגדירו את הגרסה ל־1.3.0 ב־package.json והריצו שוב.
