Linear Pairs

When two lines cross, four angles appear at once. Take any two that sit next to each other: they share an arm, and their outer arms run opposite ways along one line. Such neighbors are a linear pair, and a linear pair always adds to 180°.

The angles of 55° and y° form a linear pair along the horizontal line. Their sum is 180°, so 55 + y = 180 and y = 125.
