Linear Pairs
Part of the Angles section of Coddy's Geometry journey. Lesson 17 of 62.
When two lines cross, four angles appear at once. Take any two that sit next to each other: they share an arm, and their outer arms run opposite ways along one line. Such neighbors are a linear pair, and a linear pair always adds to 180°.
In the figure, 55° and y° are neighbors along the horizontal line, so 55 + y = 180 and y = 125. Nothing here is new: it is the angles on a line rule wearing crossing lines. The name is what to keep: a linear pair is the crossing’s built-in 180.
