Which Rule Is It

Part of the Angles section of Coddy's Geometry journey. Lesson 35 of 62.

The skill that outlives this chapter is the diagnosis: see the pair, name its shape, and write the equation the shape dictates. F or Z, write equality. C, write a 180 sum.

Co-interior angles: y plus 30 degrees and 80 degrees

Diagnosing the figure: the marked angles hug the same side of the transversal between the parallels, a C. So they add to 180, and the model writes itself: (y + 30) + 80 = 180. Naming the shape first makes the equation a formality.

Challenge

Medium

The marked angles sit between the parallels on opposite sides of the transversal: (x + 35)° and 110°.

Alternate angles between two parallel lines: x plus 35 degrees and 110 degrees

Write the equation the figure states. Do not solve it.
