Each operation has its own rule, and that is the whole difficulty
Adding and subtracting fractions needs a common denominator, because you can only combine parts of the same size. Multiplying needs no such thing: you multiply the tops and the bottoms and you are done. Dividing is multiplying by the reciprocal. Three different rules for four operations is why fractions feel harder than they are - nothing here is difficult, but the rules do not generalise, so each one has to be known separately.
That is what this page shows. Each step names the rule it is applying, so "do I need a common denominator here?" gets answered in writing rather than by guessing. The route is the one a lesson walks: mixed numbers to improper fractions first, then the operation's own rule, then reduce, then back to a mixed number if the answer is bigger than one.
Everything is exact. One third plus one sixth is one half, not 0.49999999999999994, and a denominator of 999983 does not get rounded away. The answer is offered as a fraction first because that is what the question was about, with the decimal and percentage beside it for when a marking scheme wants those instead.
What to watch for in the steps
A common denominator is only needed to add or subtract. Multiplying and dividing never need one, and looking for one anyway is wasted work.
The least common denominator is the smallest number both denominators divide into. Any common denominator works and gives the same final answer - the least one just keeps the numbers small.
When you rewrite a fraction over a new denominator, the top gets multiplied by the same amount as the bottom. That is what keeps it the same number.
Dividing by a fraction gives a bigger answer whenever you divide by something less than one. 3/4 ÷ 1/2 is 3/2. That is not an error; it is what dividing means.
An answer is not finished until it is in lowest terms, and often not until it is a mixed number too - check what the question asked for.

Worked examples
Adding with unlike denominators: 3/4 + 5/6
The least common denominator of 4 and 6 is 12, so the fractions become 9/12 and 10/12 - and now they are parts of the same size, so the tops add: 19/12. As a mixed number that is 1 7/12. Note that 24 would also have worked as a denominator; you would have got 38/24, which reduces to the same answer with more arithmetic.
Multiplying: 2/3 × 9/4
No common denominator, no rewriting: multiply across to get 18/12, then reduce by 6 to get 3/2. You could also cancel before multiplying - the 3 into the 9 and the 2 into the 4 - which gives 3/2 straight away and is the same arithmetic done in a smarter order.
Dividing: 3/4 ÷ 2/5
Flip the second fraction and multiply: 3/4 × 5/2 = 15/8. The answer is bigger than either starting fraction, which is exactly what dividing by a number smaller than one does. If that feels wrong, ask how many halves fit in three quarters - the answer is more than one.
When the answer is a whole number: 2/3 × 3/2
Multiplying across gives 6/6, which reduces to 1. Two fractions whose product is 1 are reciprocals of each other, and that is the fact the division rule rests on: dividing by 2/3 and multiplying by 3/2 are the same operation.
Common mistakes
Adding the denominators. 1/2 + 1/3 is not 2/5. Only the numerators are added, and only once the denominators already match.
Looking for a common denominator to multiply. Multiplying needs no common denominator at all - that rule belongs to addition and subtraction.
Flipping the wrong fraction when dividing. It is the second one - the divisor - that gets turned upside down.
Rewriting only the top when changing the denominator. Multiply top and bottom by the same number, or you have changed the value.
Leaving the answer unreduced. 18/12 is the right value but usually not the accepted answer; 3/2 is.
Cancelling across a plus sign. In (3 + 6)/6 you may not strike the 6s; only a factor of the WHOLE top cancels.
Fraction FAQ
How do I add fractions?
Give them the same denominator, then add the numerators and keep that denominator. To get the same denominator, find the least common multiple of the two and multiply each fraction's top and bottom by whatever it takes to reach it. Then reduce the answer if anything divides both parts.
Do I need a common denominator to multiply fractions?
No. Multiply the numerators together and the denominators together, then reduce. Common denominators are only needed for addition and subtraction, because those are the operations that combine parts and the parts have to be the same size.
How do I divide fractions?
Multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction - flip it upside down and multiply. 3/4 ÷ 2/5 becomes 3/4 × 5/2 = 15/8. This is why dividing by a fraction smaller than one makes the answer bigger.

Yes, along with the mixed number and the percentage. The fraction is shown first because it is exact: 19/12 is the answer and 1.583333 is a rounding of it. When the decimal does not terminate the page marks it as approximate rather than pretending otherwise.
Can it handle negative fractions?
Yes. The sign can go in the numerator, in the whole-number part of a mixed number, or in front - and -2 3/4 is treated as one negative quantity rather than as -2 plus 3/4, which is the reading a surprising number of calculators get wrong.
