A solution is a value of the unknown that makes the claim true. Substitute it and both sides agree.

Solving means changing the form without changing the claim: the same move applied to both sides keeps the balance.

Why learn pre-algebra with Coddy

  • You do the arithmetic. The board checks your numbers instead of working them out for you.

What is pre-algebra?

Do I need pre-algebra before algebra?

If fractions, negative numbers or the order of operations feel shaky, yes. Algebra uses them in every line, so a gap there shows up as a mistake later. If they already feel easy, you can start with the algebra course.

What does the pre-algebra course cover?

Four sections: numbers and operations (integers, the order of operations, powers and roots), factors and fractions (primes, GCF and LCM, fractions and mixed numbers), decimals, percents and ratios, and expressions and data (variables, distributing, like terms, sequences, averages and probability).

Can I use a calculator in the course?

No. Working the numbers out is the skill this course trains, so the board has no calculator. Each problem is small enough to do by hand, one line at a time.

Is the pre-algebra course free?
