The Opposite of x
Part of the Fundamentals section of Coddy's Math journey. Lesson 15 of 64.
-x means "the opposite of x", and it is the same as -1 × x: a coefficient of -1 with the 1 left unwritten, just as x is 1x. So -x = 7 is a one-step equation with coefficient -1.
-x/(-1) = 7/(-1)
x = -7
Two ways to think about it, same result: divide both sides by -1, or "take the opposite of both sides" (the opposite of -x is x, the opposite of 7 is -7). Check: the opposite of -7 is 7. True.
Challenge
Solve the equation -x = -9 for x.
