Castle Early

Chapter 7 taught you how to castle. This lesson is about when: within the first ten moves or so, usually kingside, because only two pieces stand in the way there. Notation gives castling its own symbol: O-O for kingside, O-O-O for queenside (one extra O for the rook's longer trip). After 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Bc5, White is ready:

One move later the king lives in a fortress. He stands on g1 behind the untouched f2, g2 and h2 pawns, and the rook has jumped from its sleepy corner to f1, pointed at the middle of the board. One move, two problems solved: the king finds shelter and the rook finds work.

Now the warning label. A king that stays in the centre is betting that the centre stays closed, and it never does: pawns get traded, files open, and suddenly enemy rooks and queens are staring straight at him. This is how beginners lose most of their games: not to brilliant tactics, but to a king left standing on his starting square.

So here is the opening recipe so far, and it fits on a napkin: a pawn to the centre, knights and bishops out, castle, and only then start making bigger plans. Safety first is not timid chess; it is what lets you attack later without looking over your shoulder.
