Accessing by Index

Part of the Fundamentals section of Coddy's Dart journey — lesson 50 of 94.

Accessing list elements by index allows you to retrieve individual items from a list using their position number. In Dart, list indices start at 0.

Create a list of fruits:

List<String> fruits = ['Apple', 'Banana', 'Orange'];

Access the first element (index 0):

String firstFruit = fruits[0];
print(firstFruit);

After executing the above code, the output will be:

Apple

Access the second element (index 1):

String secondFruit = fruits[1];
print(secondFruit);

After executing the above code, the output will be:

Banana

Challenge

Beginner

In this challenge, you'll practice accessing elements in a list using their index. In Dart, list indices start at 0, so the first element is at index 0, the second at index 1, and so on.

Complete the code to access the second and fourth elements of the fruits list and store them in the variables secondFruit and fourthFruit.

Expected output:

The second fruit is: Banana
The fourth fruit is: Mango

Cheat sheet

Access list elements by index using square brackets. List indices start at 0:

List<String> fruits = ['Apple', 'Banana', 'Orange'];
String firstFruit = fruits[0];  // 'Apple'
String secondFruit = fruits[1]; // 'Banana'

Try it yourself

void main() {
  // This list is already defined for you
  List<String> fruits = ['Apple', 'Banana', 'Orange', 'Mango', 'Grapes'];

  // TODO: Access the second element (Banana) using its index
  // and store it in the variable 'secondFruit'
  String secondFruit = '';

  // TODO: Access the fourth element (Mango) using its index
  // and store it in the variable 'fourthFruit'
  String fourthFruit = '';

  // This will display the results
  print('The second fruit is: $secondFruit');
  print('The fourth fruit is: $fourthFruit');
}
