Defining a Basic Function
Part of the Fundamentals section of Coddy's Dart journey — lesson 65 of 94.
Defining a Basic Function in Dart allows you to create reusable blocks of code that perform specific tasks.
Create a basic function that prints a message:
void greet() {
print('Hello, Dart programmer!');
}
void main() {
greet();
}After executing the above code, the output will be:
Hello, Dart programmer!The function definition has three parts: return type (void), name (greet), and body (code between curly braces). Call the function by writing its name followed by parentheses.
Challenge
BeginnerIn this challenge, you'll practice defining a basic function in Dart. Functions are reusable blocks of code that perform specific tasks.
Complete the code below by defining a function called greet that prints a greeting message. The function should:
- Take no parameters
- Print the text
Hello, Dart!when called
After defining the function, it will be called from the main function.
Expected output:
Hello, Dart!Cheat sheet
To define a basic function in Dart, use the syntax: return type, function name, and body in curly braces:
void greet() {
print('Hello, Dart programmer!');
}Call the function by writing its name followed by parentheses:
void main() {
greet();
}Try it yourself
// TODO: Define a function called 'greet' that prints 'Hello, Dart!'
// The function should take no parameters and return nothing
void main() {
// This will call your function
greet();
}This lesson includes a short quiz. Start the lesson to answer it and track your progress.
