Half-Equations in Acid
Part of the Oxidation and Reduction section of Coddy's Chemistry journey. Lesson 13 of 27.
In acid, oxygen leaves as H₂O and hydrogen comes from H⁺.
Order: the changing element, then O with H₂O, then H with H⁺, then charge with e⁻.
MnO₄⁻ + 8H⁺ + 5e⁻ → Mn²⁺ + 4H₂O
Mn: +7 to +2, five electrons. Charge: +2 on both sides.
Challenge
Purple permanganate, MnO₄⁻, is reduced to almost colorless Mn²⁺ in acid. Balance the half-equation.
Try it yourself
MnO4−H+e−Mn2+H2O
