Intro to Variables
Audio

A variable is a named container that stores a value you can reference later in your program.

In Python, you create one by writing the name, an equals sign, then the value you want to store.

The value can change over time. Reassigning the name simply points it to a new value.

Why make games in Python on Coddy

  • You write real pygame: the same loop, events and clock.tick you would write on your own computer.
  • The game runs next to your code, so every change shows the next time you press Play.
  • Each lesson adds one feature, until the game can be won and lost.
  • Check plays your game and tells you which part does not work yet.

Questions about making games in Python

How do you make a game in Python?

With pygame: open a window, then run a loop that reads the keys, moves things and draws a frame, about 60 times a second. This path teaches Python first, then that loop, one game at a time.

Is pygame good for beginners?

Yes. It is plain Python with a small set of drawing and input functions, so you see every line that makes the game work. It suits 2D games such as Snake and Pong.

Do I need to install pygame?

No. The lessons run pygame in your browser. To play the games on your own computer, install it with pip install pygame-ce and run the same code.

What is pygame-ce?

pygame-ce, the community edition, is an actively maintained fork of pygame. You still write import pygame, and it is what these lessons run.

Can I make my own game?

Yes. The last game of the course is one you design, and you can save any lesson as a project and keep building it.

Can I play the games on a phone?

They play best on a computer or a Chromebook with a keyboard. On a phone, the game shows arrow keys and Space on the screen.
