Every way to learn

Read, listen, test yourself, ask the AI, or look up anything you've already covered. Every lesson meets you where you are.

Intro to Variables
Audio

A variable is a named container that stores a value you can reference later in your program.

In Python, you create one by writing the name, an equals sign, then the value you want to store.

The value can change over time - reassigning the name simply points it to a new value.

Why learn GDScript with Coddy

  • Run real GDScript on a real Godot 4 engine, right in your browser. No Godot download, no project to set up, no scene tree to configure: each lesson runs your script on the engine and shows the printed output and any errors instantly.
  • GDScript as Godot developers write it: var and const, static typing with type hints and := inference, if/elif/else, match with guards and array and dictionary patterns, for and while loops, range(), functions with return types and default values, typed arrays, dictionaries, enums, lambdas, recursion, and map, filter and reduce.
  • Object-oriented GDScript the way Godot uses it: classes, _init and self, static variables and functions, property setters and getters, inheritance with super, type checks with is, _to_string, inner classes, RefCounted vs Node, and signals you declare, emit() and connect(). Then design patterns like Singleton, Factory, Observer and State, all written in GDScript.
  • AI hints help with the parts that trip up beginners, like indentation errors, integer division dropping the remainder, casting text input to numbers, and why a typed variable refuses a value, without handing you the answer.

Frequently asked questions about learning GDScript

What is GDScript used for?

GDScript is the built-in scripting language of the Godot engine. Developers use it to write the logic of Godot games and apps: player movement, enemies, menus, inventories, save systems and editor tools. It is designed around Godot's nodes and signals, so it is the most direct way to script a Godot project. Godot also supports C#, and C++ through GDExtension, but most Godot tutorials, docs and examples are written in GDScript.

Is GDScript similar to Python?

Very similar. GDScript uses indentation to mark blocks, func where Python uses def, and var to declare variables, so Python developers usually feel at home within days. The differences are optional static typing (var speed: float = 10.0), built-in types made for games such as Vector2 and Color, signals, and classes that map to Godot nodes. It is its own language, not a Python dialect, so Python libraries do not run in it.

Is GDScript a good first programming language?

Yes. GDScript has short, readable syntax with no semicolons or braces, which makes it one of the friendlier first languages. The course assumes no programming experience: it starts with printing text and storing values in variables, then builds up to functions, arrays, dictionaries and classes, one small lesson at a time.

Do I need to install Godot to take the course?

No. Every lesson runs your GDScript on a real Godot engine in your browser and shows the output, so there is nothing to download or set up. When you install Godot later, everything you learned carries over, because it is the same language running on the same engine.

Will this course teach me to make games in Godot?

It teaches the language you make them with. You learn variables, control flow, functions, arrays, dictionaries, classes, inheritance and signals through console programs and projects that run instantly. The course does not cover the Godot editor, scenes, sprites or physics. Learning GDScript first means that when you open Godot, you can focus on the engine instead of fighting the syntax.

How long does it take to learn GDScript?

The basics (variables, decisions, loops and functions) take one to two weeks of daily practice. Strings, arrays, dictionaries and error handling take another two to three weeks, and classes, inheritance, signals and design patterns a few weeks more. If you already know Python, expect to move through the first section much faster.

Is Godot free, and is the GDScript course free?

Both are free. Godot is free and open source under the MIT license, with no royalties or fees, and runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. The interactive GDScript course on Coddy is free too: lessons, coding exercises, projects, challenges and a certificate.

Do I get a certificate after the GDScript course?

Yes. Finishing a section of the GDScript course gives you a free certificate of completion that you can add to your resume or share on LinkedIn, next to the Godot projects you build.
