Try a Roblox script right here

Three small games from the course. Change the script in the editor, press Play, and walk through what you wrote.

Touching the lava sets the player's Health to 0. Change that 0 on line 6 to 50, press Play, and the lava only hurts.

local lava = script.Parent

lava.Touched:Connect(function(hit)
	local humanoid = hit.Parent:FindFirstChild("Humanoid")
	if humanoid then
		humanoid.Health = 0
	end
end)

Every way to learn

Read, listen, test yourself, ask the AI, or look up anything you've already covered. Every lesson meets you where you are.

Intro to Variables
Audio

A variable is a named container that stores a value you can reference later in your program.

In Python, you create one by writing the name, an equals sign, then the value you want to store.

The value can change over time - reassigning the name simply points it to a new value.

Why learn Roblox scripting with Coddy

  • Your script and your game sit side by side. Press Play and walk your character through what you just wrote, with W A S D on a keyboard or a thumbstick on a touch screen. Press Check and watch a test player walk the same route the grader walks.
  • It runs in the browser, so you can learn on a school Chromebook, a tablet or a phone. Roblox Studio only runs on Windows and macOS. Here there is nothing to install and no Roblox account to sign in to.
  • The Roblox API you will meet in every real game: Instance.new, workspace, a part's Position, Size, Color and Transparency, the Touched event, Humanoid, Players and leaderstats, task.wait, ClickDetector and TweenService. The engine copies Roblox's own defaults, such as respawning after 5 seconds and a JumpHeight of 7.2, so the Luau you write here is the Luau you write in Studio. There you also build the parts your script expects, which each lesson here builds for you.
  • 24 lessons in 5 chapters, each one ending in a working game mechanic: a vanishing bridge, a lava floor, a coin collector, a jump pad, a button door, a moving platform, checkpoints and a finish line. The last lesson puts them together into your own obby.

Frequently asked questions about Roblox scripting

What coding language does Roblox use?

Roblox games are scripted in Luau, a language Roblox built from Lua 5.1 and made open source. Luau keeps Lua's syntax and adds optional types and a few conveniences, like += and string interpolation. The Roblox engine itself is written in C++, but you never write C++ to make a Roblox game: every script in Roblox Studio is Luau. Plain Lua mostly runs unchanged as Luau, which is why many people still call it Roblox Lua.

How do I start scripting on Roblox?

Start with three ideas. A script finds an object in the game (workspace.Lava or script.Parent), changes its properties (Color, Size, Transparency), and connects a function to an event so code runs when something happens (Touched, PlayerAdded, MouseClick). This course teaches them in that order, one small game per lesson. In Roblox Studio you add a script by hovering over a part or ServerScriptService in the Explorer, pressing the plus button and choosing Script.

Do I need Roblox Studio to learn Roblox scripting?

Not to learn it. Every lesson runs in your browser on a small game engine that Coddy wrote in Luau, which copies the part of the Roblox API a beginner uses. When you want to publish a game for other players, you will need Roblox Studio, which is free for Windows and macOS. Your Luau and what you learned carry over; in Studio you build the parts and place the scripts yourself, the way each lesson's world did for you.

Can I learn Roblox scripting on a Chromebook or a phone?

Yes. Roblox Studio does not run on ChromeOS, iPads or phones, but these lessons do: the editor and the game both run in the browser, and on a touch screen the game shows a thumbstick and a jump button, the way Roblox does on a phone. To publish your own Roblox game later, you will need a Windows or Mac computer for Studio.

Is this the real Roblox?

No. It is Coddy's own engine, written in Luau and running in your browser, that imitates a beginner subset of Roblox: parts, Touched, Humanoid, Players, leaderstats, task.wait, ClickDetector, TweenService and a few more. It copies Roblox's defaults and quirks on purpose, so what you learn transfers to Studio. It has no client and server split (no RemoteEvents), no GUI and only simple physics (walking, jumping, falling and touching), which are the next things to learn in Studio. Coddy is not affiliated with or endorsed by Roblox Corporation. Roblox and Luau are trademarks of Roblox Corporation.

Do I need to know Lua before Roblox scripting?

No. The course teaches variables, loops, functions and events as each game needs them. If you would like a slower start first, the Lua course begins from zero, and the Luau course teaches the type system that larger Roblox projects use.

How long does it take to learn Roblox scripting?

This course is 24 lessons, about 4 hours at your own pace, and by the end you can script parts, events, a leaderboard and a whole obby. Building a full game of your own takes longer: plan on a few months of small projects in Roblox Studio, adding the client and server code, saving data and user interfaces that come after this course.

Is scripting on Roblox allowed?

Yes. Writing scripts for your own game in Roblox Studio is how every Roblox game is made, and it is what this course teaches. What breaks Roblox's Terms of Use is running exploit scripts inside other people's games with a script executor. That can get an account banned, and this course has nothing to do with it.

Is this a good Roblox coding class for kids?

Lessons are short, every one ends in a game the learner can walk around in, and AI hints explain mistakes without giving the answer away, so a young Roblox player can learn on their own. Teachers and coding clubs can run it as a class with a free classroom, which shows each student's progress lesson by lesson.

Is the Roblox scripting course free?

Yes. All 24 lessons, the game in every lesson, the AI hints and the certificate of completion are free. A free account works through a few lessons a day, and Pro removes the daily limit.

This course is one step of a longer path: several courses in the order a mentor would teach them, each with its own free certificate.
