The CIA Triad
Part of the Security Fundamentals section of Coddy's Cybersecurity journey. Lesson 6 of 43.
Security is about more than keeping passwords secret. It also means keeping information correct and making sure people can use the systems they need. These three goals are called the CIA triad.
Confidentiality means keeping private information away from people who should not see it. For example, someone reading another employee's private payslip would break confidentiality.
Integrity means keeping information from being changed without permission. If someone changes a product's price without approval, that is an integrity problem.
Availability means people can use a service when they need it. If an attack takes the online shop offline, customers cannot buy anything. That is an availability problem.
For the payslip example, you would record confidentiality as the goal that was harmed:

The board meets at noon and wants one line about this morning. While the intruder was in Mia's account, they read our mail and changed one thing. Record the page they changed, and which of the three it hit.
