Nuclide Notation

Part of the Atomic Structure section of Coddy's Chemistry journey. Lesson 14 of 45.

The mass number goes at the top left of the symbol, the atomic number at the bottom left, and any charge at the top right.

The notation for chlorine-37: 37 at the top left, 17 at the bottom left, then Cl

Chlorine-37 in nuclide notation

³⁷₁₇Cl has 17 protons, 20 neutrons and 17 electrons. The symbol already gives the atomic number, so it is often left out: ³⁷Cl.

¹⁶O²⁻ has 8 protons, 8 neutrons and 10 electrons.

The oxide ion: 16 at the top left, 8 at the bottom left, O, and 2 minus at the top right

An ion carries its charge at the top right
