Naming the Sides

Part of the Right-Triangle Trigonometry section of Coddy's Trigonometry journey. Lesson 2 of 46.

In a right triangle, the sides get their names from the angle you look from.

  • The hypotenuse is across from the square corner, the 90° angle. It is always the longest side.
  • The opposite side is across from your angle. It does not touch your angle.
  • The adjacent side touches your angle, but it is not the hypotenuse.

The tree triangle seen from the 37° angle: the tree is opposite, the shadow adjacent, the ray the hypotenuse

Look from the 37° angle at the tip of the shadow. The tree is opposite and the shadow is adjacent. Look from another corner and these two names change. The hypotenuse does not change.
