Decimal to Fraction
Part of the Decimals, Percents & Ratios section of Coddy's Pre-Algebra journey. Lesson 19 of 53.
A decimal already is a fraction; you just have to read it aloud. 0.24 is twenty-four hundredths, because its last digit sits in the hundredths place. So is . The last digit's place names the bottom: tenths give 10, hundredths give 100, thousandths give 1000.
Then simplify, as you did in the fractions section: divide the top and the bottom by their greatest common factor. 24 and 100 share a factor of 4, so becomes . 6 and 25 share no factor except 1, so the fraction is in lowest terms.
Why bother simplifying? and are the same number, but the lowest form is the one people expect to read, and the board finishes a fraction task only in lowest terms. It is also the easiest to picture: 6 parts out of 25.
Challenge
Write as a fraction in lowest terms. First write it over the right power of ten, then simplify on the next line.
