Line Up the Points
Part of the Decimals, Percents & Ratios section of Coddy's Pre-Algebra journey. Lesson 4 of 53.
To add 4.75 + 2.6, write 2.6 as 2.60. Then put the decimal points under each other and add.
4.75 + 2.60 = 7.35
So line up the decimal points, and add zeros so both numbers have the same places. If you line up the last digits instead, you get 6.81, which is wrong.
Subtracting works the same way. A whole number has its decimal point at the end. So 9 is 9.00, and 9 - 2.35 is 6.65.
Challenge
Work out 12 - 4.37.
