Fraction to Decimal
Part of the Decimals, Percents & Ratios section of Coddy's Pre-Algebra journey. Lesson 21 of 56.
A fraction is a division: 5/8 means 5 divided by 8. So to write a fraction as a decimal, you divide the top by the bottom. 8 does not go into 5, so write 5 as 5.000 and divide as you learned in the last chapter.
50 divided by 8 is 6, remainder 2. Bring down a zero: 20 divided by 8 is 2, remainder 4. Bring down another: 40 divided by 8 is 5, remainder 0. The remainder is zero, so the division stops, and 5/8 is 0.625. A quick check: 0.625 is a little more than one half, and 5 eighths is a little more than 4 eighths.
A fraction and its decimal are the same number, written two ways. When a task asks for a decimal, the board waits for the decimal form. Decimals are what a calculator, a price tag or a measuring tape shows, and they are easy to compare.
Challenge
Write 3/8 as a decimal. Divide 3 by 8 on paper, then type the decimal as your next line.
