Unit Price
Part of the Decimals, Percents & Ratios section of Coddy's Pre-Algebra journey. Lesson 19 of 56.
A unit price is the price of one item. 4 pens cost 5.20 dollars together. Sharing the total equally among the pens gives the price of one. Use u for unit price: u = 5.2 / 4.
Divide, keeping the point in place: 4 goes into 5 once with 1 left over, which is 10 tenths. With the 2 tenths that makes 12 tenths, so each pen gets 3 tenths. u = 1.3: one pen costs 1.30 dollars.
Unit prices let you compare deals. A pack of 4 and a pack of 6 cannot be compared by their totals, but the price of one item can. Check by multiplying back: 1.30 · 4 is 5.20.
Challenge
A pack of 3 notebooks costs 4.50 dollars. Find the price u of one notebook. Write u equal to the calculation the story describes, work it out on the next line, then press Check.
