Parentheses First

Part of the Numbers & Operations section of Coddy's Pre-Algebra journey. Lesson 3 of 57.

Parentheses are round brackets. Work out what is inside the brackets first. Then follow the other rules as usual.

$\left(8+2\right)\cdot 5$ : first, $8+2$ is 10. Then $10\cdot 5$ is 50.

Without brackets, $8+2\cdot 5$ is $8+10$ , which is 18. The brackets change the answer.

Challenge

Six friends go to a concert. Each one pays a 38 dollar ticket and a 12 dollar fee. Together they pay $6\cdot \left(38+12\right)$ dollars. How much is that?
