Coding has been mostly coastal for years, anchored by Silicon Valley, Boston, and the New York–Seattle axis. Now, fresh data shows coding ambition roots well beyond those zip codes. Coddy Tech analyzed the 75 largest U.S. metros across learning searches, GitHub developer density, software job growth, bootcamp interest, and hackathon activity to map where coding has taken hold, and where it's catching fire.

Coding Soars in Austin and San Jose
Austin, San Jose, and Seattle lead the overall ranking as the three most established coding metros.

Here's how the overall map shakes out:
- Austin and San Jose score 97 and 94 out of 100, more than 20 points clear of every other metro.
- Texas and California each place four metros in the top 25, the most of any state, and no other state has more than two.
- The Mountain West have four metros in the top 25, with Salt Lake City, Denver, Tucson, and Albuquerque carrying the region.
- Six regions appears in the top 25, and 14 of the 25 are outside the West Coast and Northeast.
Albuquerque, San Antonio, and Houston Set the Pace
When we shift from established presence to momentum, Albuquerque, San Antonio, and Houston pull in front, with a wave of Florida metros right behind them.

The momentum picture surfaced a different cast of cities:
- Only New York and Salt Lake City land in the top 10 of both the rising and the established rankings.
- San Antonio ranks second on momentum and posts the fastest developer job growth of any metro in the study, up 73% since 2022.
- Florida has four metros in the top 10 of the momentum ranking, including Jacksonville, Cape Coral, North Port, and Tampa, with Cape Coral and North Port hitting fifth and ninth despite ranking 72nd and 63rd of 75 by population.
- Nine of the 10 fastest-rising metros are in the Sun Belt, stretching across the Southeast, Texas, and the Mountain West.
Where the Beginners, Career Switchers, and Communities Are
When we break the data into specialized lenses, the rankings spread out, with Salt Lake City, Austin, and San Jose leading for career switchers and Austin, Boston, and San Francisco anchoring the strongest coding communities.

Here's where the specialized rankings land:
- Eight of the 10 strongest community metros are on the coasts, while the Mountain West has the most career switchers (three of its metros are in the top 10).
- Texas has three metros in the beginner top 10 (Austin, San Antonio, and El Paso), more than any other state.
- Salt Lake City ranks first for career switchers and 37th for community strength, the widest split of any category leader.
- Eleven different metros fill the top five lists across the beginner, career switcher, and community rankings.
Methodology
The New Coding Capitals is a meta ranking of the 75 largest U.S. metros by 2023 Census population. Coding interest is associated with a metro, it is not caused by it. Every signal is divided by population and expressed per 100,000 residents, so the rankings reflect intensity rather than metro size. Each per capita signal is winsorized at the 5th and 95th percentiles, then min-max scaled to a 0 to 100 range before weighting. Five rankings draw on the same signal pool with different weights. Overall blends learning search 25, GitHub developer density 25, software developer concentration 25, bootcamp search 15, and hackathon presence 10. Fastest rising blends job growth 40, search momentum 35, and hackathon growth 25. Best for beginners blends learning search 60, GitHub density 20, and hackathon presence 20. Best for career switchers blends bootcamp search 35, job growth 30, developer concentration 25, and learning search 10. Strongest communities blends GitHub density 55 and hackathon presence 45. Sources are metro keyword search volume by basket, GitHub developer density from the user search API by location, software developer jobs and growth from BLS OEWS occupation 15-1252 for May 2022 and May 2025, hackathon activity from MLH season schedules and population from the Census. Overall, beginners and communities cover all 75 metros. Fastest rising and career switchers cover the 64 momentum-eligible metros. Under weight shifts of plus or minus 10 points, the top 10 holds, with a worst case of 7 of 10 on beginners and 10 of 10 on communities. Two limitations are worth noting: GitHub location is free text with documented over- and undercount, reduced here through state-qualified queries. Five New England metros are held out of the momentum rankings because a 2022 to 2025 area definition change would otherwise read as job growth.
