Every way to learn

Intro to Variables
Audio

A variable is a named container that stores a value you can reference later in your program.

In Python, you create one by writing the name, an equals sign, then the value you want to store.

The value can change over time. Reassigning the name simply points it to a new value.

Why learn Node.js with Coddy

  • Your code and what it does sit side by side. A program runs in a terminal beside the editor: type the arguments after node notes.js, give it input, and see what it prints, its exit code and the files it writes. A server answers a request bar: pick the method, the path, headers and a JSON body, and see the status, the headers and the response, with every request in the Console.
  • The first section builds a command-line notes tool: process.argv, exit codes, environment variables, ES modules and CommonJS, reading and writing files, callbacks, promises, async and await, Promise.all, the event loop, timers, EventEmitter, reading input and package.json.
  • Then Express, on a recipe site: routes and parameters, query strings, JSON and status codes, HTML pages, static files and redirects, middleware and the order it runs in, reading a request body, 404 and error handlers, routers and async routes that read a file.
  • REST APIs on a task tracker: POST, PATCH, PUT and DELETE, validation with zod, one error shape, conflicts, filtering, sorting, pagination, CORS and a page that calls the API. Then a database, on a book ratings API: MongoDB inserts, ObjectId, filters, update operators, unique indexes, upserts, aggregation pipelines and $lookup.

Frequently asked questions about learning Node.js

Do I need to know JavaScript before learning Node.js?

Yes, the basics: variables, functions, arrays, objects and arrow functions. Node.js runs JavaScript, so the course uses them from the first lesson. New to code? Start with the JavaScript course.

Is this real Node.js?

Check grades your code on Node.js 24 with the same Express and NestJS versions the lessons use. When you press Run, your program or server runs in your browser on Coddy's Node.js runtime, which provides Node's own modules (fs, process, http, events, crypto), so a server starts the moment you press the button. The code you write is ordinary Node.js.

Do I need to install Node.js or MongoDB?

No. Everything runs in the browser. The database section uses an in-memory database that speaks the MongoDB driver's API and starts empty on every Run. The course is on the website, on a computer or a phone, and not in the Coddy mobile apps. To build your own projects later, install Node.js and MongoDB on your computer: the code you learn here carries over.

What will I build in this Node.js course?

Six projects, one per section: a command-line notes tool, a recipe site, a task tracker API, a book ratings API on MongoDB, a notes app with logins, and the task API again in NestJS.

Does the course teach Express and NestJS?

Both. Express is the framework from the second section to the fifth, and the last section rebuilds the task API in NestJS with TypeScript, so you see what NestJS adds on top of Express.

Is this the MERN stack?

It is the back end of it: Node.js, Express and MongoDB. The front end, React, is its own React course.

Is the Node.js course free?

Yes. The lessons, the terminal and the request bar, the AI hints and the certificates are free. A free account works through a few lessons a day, and Pro removes the daily limit.

Do I get a certificate for the Node.js course?

Yes. Each of the 6 sections gives you a free certificate of completion when you finish it, with its own page you can share or add to LinkedIn.
