Energy Diagrams

Part of the Energy, Rates and Equilibrium section of Coddy's Chemistry journey. Lesson 2 of 35.

An energy diagram shows the chemicals' energy from reactants (left) to products (right).

Exothermic: the products end lower than the reactants.

An energy profile: the products end 90 kJ below the reactants after a hump 50 kJ high

Exothermic: the products are lower than the reactants

Endothermic: the products end higher than the reactants.

An energy profile: the products end 60 kJ above the reactants after a hump 110 kJ high

Endothermic: the products are higher than the reactants

Hydrogen burns in oxygen. In the units of this diagram, the reaction gives out 240 kJ240\ \mathrm{kJ} and its hump stands 80 kJ80\ \mathrm{kJ} above the reactants. Say what kind of reaction it is and draw its levels.
