Exothermic and Endothermic
Part of the Energy, Rates and Equilibrium section of Coddy's Chemistry journey. Lesson 1 of 35.
Exothermic: the chemicals give energy to the surroundings, which get warmer. Burning, hand warmers and neutralization are exothermic.
Endothermic: the chemicals take energy from the surroundings, which get colder. Cold packs, photosynthesis and heating limestone are endothermic.
Challenge
When calcium oxide is added to water in a self-heating can, the can gets hot enough to warm a drink. Is the reaction exothermic or endothermic?
