Area of a Parallelogram
Part of the Polygons & Quadrilaterals section of Coddy's Geometry journey. Lesson 40 of 61.
To use base × height, find a base and a height that go together: the height must be drawn at right angles to the line of that base, with the square mark at its foot. Any other side is a distractor for the area.
Here the base AB is 15 and the height DE is 5, with the square at E. The area is 15 × 5 = 75. The side AD is 13, but it leans, so it does not measure how far apart the parallel sides are. Pick Area of a parallelogram and the board takes the base and the height.
Challenge
ABCD is a parallelogram with base AB = 9, slanted side AD = 5 and the dashed height DE = 4. Find its area, then press Check.
