Volume or Surface Area?
Part of the Surface Area & Volume section of Coddy's Geometry journey. Lesson 33 of 62.
Volume and surface area answer different questions about the same solid. Volume is the space inside: how much water a tank holds. Surface area is the outside: how much paint it takes to cover it.
This cube has edges of 2. Its volume is 2 × 2 × 2 = 8 cubic units, and its surface area is 6 × 2^2 = 24 square units. Different units, different formulas, and you choose by the question: filling is volume, covering is surface area.
When you tap a solid, the board asks which of the two you want. Then pick the rule that matches.
