Sorting Text

Part of the REST APIs section of Coddy's Node.js journey. Lesson 15 of 25.

Your tracker can filter tasks. Now let a client request alphabetical titles without changing the stored order. A sort comparison returns a negative number when its first item belongs before the second, a positive number when it belongs after, and zero when they tie.

const sorted = cities.toSorted((a, b) => a.name.localeCompare(b.name));

Subtracting strings does not provide a useful order. localeCompare compares text instead. toSorted returns a new array, leaving the original array unchanged. Sort the filtered list so filtering and ordering work together. The following Sorting lesson adds other fields, descending order and invalid-query handling.

Challenge

Easy

Continue your task tracker in routes/tasks.js. In the list route, after the existing filters, make ?sort=title return tasks alphabetically by title. Without that value, preserve the current behavior. Do not change the stored task order.

Try GET /api/tasks?sort=title, then GET /api/tasks. The second list must still be in its original order. Filtering with ?done=false&sort=title must still return only unfinished tasks.
