A taxi charges 4 dollars to start, plus 2 dollars for every mile. A ride is d miles long. The miles cost $2d$ dollars, and the start adds 4. So the fare is $2d+4$ dollars.

The amount that repeats for every mile is multiplied by the letter. The amount you pay once is added.

This one expression gives the price of every ride. For 10 miles it is 24 dollars.

Challenge

A pizza costs 9 dollars, plus 2 dollars for every topping. Write an expression for the price of a pizza with t toppings.
