AI coding tools have made a lot of developers faster and more productive. They've also made it harder to close the laptop at night. Coddy Tech surveyed 305 developers who use AI coding tools at least once a week, and the results revealed a clear tension. The same tools people credit for their best work are the ones they can't quite step away from.
Some tools pull harder than others, and that pull is changing how developers sleep, focus, and unplug. The findings below show how coding with AI actually feels in 2026, and what developers are doing to stay in control.

The Tools Developers Struggle To Put Down
Plenty of developers know the feeling of one more prompt turning into another lost hour.

More than two-fifths of developers (41%) landed in what we called the “Hooked” group, agreeing to at least three of four signs of compulsive use, from losing track of time to telling themselves they'd run just one more iteration. Claude Code was the tool developers named hardest to stop using (35%), ahead of every other option, and only 18% said no tool was hard to put down. That leaves more than four in five admitting at least one tool has a hold on them.
The “just one more loop” habit was nearly universal, with 67% of developers getting pulled into it and OpenAI Codex users falling into it most (79%). Codex also topped the list for after-hours coding, where 62% of its users kept going past the point they meant to quit, compared with 45% for Google Gemini, 40% for Claude Code, and 36% for GitHub Copilot. Across all tools, 43% of developers said they'd kept coding with AI after hours when they'd planned to stop.
That pull came at the expense of real life. To keep working, developers said they'd delayed or skipped a break or time off (36%), sleep (32%), a meal (28%), errands or chores (26%), and exercise (23%). Senior developers gave up sleep the most, at 40%.
The Payoff and the Price of Leaning on AI
The developers who lean on AI the most had the most to show for it, and the most to recover from.

Among the top third of developers by weekly AI use (20 or more hours), developers were 74% more likely to have earned a raise or promotion than lighter users. The reward gap was just as stark between the “Hooked” group and their in-control peers, where 75% credited AI with some career reward versus 39%, including raises (29% vs. 5%) and promotions (20% vs. 8%). Broadly, 74% of developers said AI made them more ambitious, a feeling that peaked with Gen Z (83%) and eased with Gen X (69%).
The same intensity showed up as strain. Heavy users were 51% more likely to report burnout, and “Hooked” developers were far more likely to say work had become hard to disconnect from (60% vs. 20%). Half of all developers (50%) said their employer now expects more output because of AI, a pressure felt most by senior (62%) and mid-level (56%) developers. And 39% said AI made it harder to switch off at the end of the day.
There were quieter costs, too. Nearly two in five developers (38%) felt their raw coding skills had slipped, a number that rose to 48% among Gen Z, and 71% admitted to shipping AI-generated code they didn't fully understand at least once. Gen Z developers (79%) and those using Google Gemini (77%) or OpenAI Codex (75%) were the most likely to send code they couldn't fully explain. For 16%, the strain even spilled into a personal relationship or friendship.
How Developers Are Pushing Back
For all the upside, most developers have felt the tug of depending on these tools a little too much.

Four in five developers (80%) said their AI use has felt more like dependence than an advantage at least once, and 59% felt that way often or sometimes. The feeling ran highest among Gen Z (87%) and senior developers (85%).
So developers are setting guardrails. Two in three (66%) have put at least one limit on their AI use, and the most common move, keeping AI to certain tasks, was also the one they found most helpful (used by 33%). Tactics like switching off suggestions (6%) and human-only coding blocks (4%) earned the least credit for actually helping.
Even so, few want to walk away. Just over three-fifths of developers (61%) said the rewards outweigh the toll, and only 25% wished they could cut back, though that figure climbed to 38% among Codex users. Asked what they could give up for a month, developers found AI coding tools stickier than social media (42%) or video games (21%), with just 17% willing to drop them. And 67% said they'd feel uncomfortable if AI tools disappeared tomorrow.
Keeping AI Coding Sustainable
AI coding tools have clearly earned their place in developers' workflows, and most wouldn't trade the productivity, ambition, and recognition they've gained. The catch is that the tools people rely on most are the ones hardest to step away from, and that pull can chip away at sleep, focus, and time off. The developers who seem happiest are the ones setting small, realistic limits, like reserving AI for certain tasks and protecting their off-hours, rather than quitting altogether. Methodology
In July 2026, we surveyed 305 developers who use AI coding tools at least weekly, sourced through Prolific and CloudResearch Connect. Respondents ranged in age from 18 to 74, with an average age of 38. By generation, the sample was 51% Millennial (ages 30 to 45), 25% Gen Z (ages 14 to 29), 20% Gen X (ages 46 to 61), and 4% Baby Boomer (ages 62 and older). Averages for numeric questions were calculated across all valid responses, with outliers excluded using the interquartile range (IQR) method. Survey data is subject to limitations including self-reported recall and response bias, and figures may not sum to 100% due to rounding or select-all-that-apply questions.
One note on that generational split: Baby Boomers make up 4% of the sample (11 respondents), which falls below our 5% reporting threshold, so no Boomer-specific breakouts appear in the findings. I included them in the methodology for full transparency on sample composition, but flagging it so the 4% line doesn't invite a Boomer stat elsewhere.
