To understand that confidence gap, Coddy Tech surveyed 510 American coders in June 2026, including beginners, career switchers, students, professionals, and people who had already walked away. We asked them when they felt sharpest, when they felt lost, and what made them want to give up.
Self-doubt, comparison, and the fear of starting too late shake confidence far more than syntax does, and how people handle those moments often decides whether they keep going.

When Learning To Code Makes You Feel Like You Don't Belong
For a lot of people, the hardest part of learning to code is the sense that everyone else is getting it faster.

Coders felt most lost when they had to build something on their own. Just under half (46%) pointed to that leap as the place they struggled most, well ahead of the 28% who named error messages. That early stretch takes a toll. For more than one in four (27%), the urge to quit arrived before they finished their first month, and 11% came closest to walking away in week one. More than two in five coders (41%) have decided at some point that coding "isn't for them" and stepped away, and even among those still at it, 17% aren't sure they'll make it, a figure that rises to 20% of coders aged 30 and up.
The feeling of being late is nearly universal. Roughly two in three coders worry they started too late or feel too old to break into tech, and nearly nine in 10 (88%) began later than the age they consider ideal. More than a third (35%) got going a decade or more after that point. Coders named 15 as the ideal age to start, yet the average coder didn't begin until 24. That sense of being behind cut across age groups, affecting 70% of millennials, 66% of Gen Z, and 59% of Gen X (despite the fact that the typical starting age dropped from about 30 for Gen X to 24 for millennials and 18 for Gen Z).
In more reassuring news, most coders said the effort paid off. About 65% called learning to code worth it — usually because tech skills still open doors (31%) or because AI makes coding even more powerful (21%) — while just 3% said it wasn't. More than a quarter (26%) never came close to quitting at all, and when others did, the trigger was more often the tech job market (21%) than anything that happened in week one (11%). Best of all, stepping away rarely stuck. More than four in five coders (81%) who walked away eventually came back.
Comparison Does More Damage Than Any Error Message
When coders described what shook their confidence most, they pointed less at the code and more at the people around them.

Comparison topped the list of confidence killers: 35% said the biggest hit came from comparing themselves to people who seemed to get it instantly, ahead of being stuck or facing error messages (20% each). The emotional residue ran deep. More than one in three coders (37%) described their early days as a mix of genuine struggle and self-doubt, and nearly three in 10 (29%) said they were actually doing fine yet still felt bad about their progress.
The pressure landed hardest on the youngest coders, with 46% of Gen Z naming comparison as their top confidence killer (nearly double the 27% of Gen X who said the same).
That habit of measuring up feeds a stubborn identity gap. Only about one in three coders (35%) considered themselves a "real programmer," and another 30% said they can build real things but still don't claim that title. The language someone learns shapes their feelings, too. Just 22% of people working mainly in HTML and CSS felt like real programmers, roughly half the share of those using Python, C, or JavaScript (about 40%). A smaller group felt outpaced by a newer kind of peer, with 10% saying they feel most behind next to "vibecoders" who mostly let AI write their code.
AI Is Changing How Coders Feel About Their Skills
AI has quickly become one of the biggest new variables in how coders feel about their work.

For some, AI has become a fresh source of doubt. One in five coders (20%) said they've considered quitting because of it, a number that climbs to 38% among those who had already stepped away at some point. Leaning on AI carries its own sting too, though. About one in six (16%) said it can make them feel like a fraud, and nearly a quarter (24%) feel capable but unsure they're actually learning. That unease skews young, with 23% of Gen Z feeling fraudulent when using AI, compared to 13% of millennials.
If you're worried that AI has made coding pointless, the people actually doing it mostly disagree. For most, AI is a reason to keep going rather than stop. Just 8% said coding matters less now, while 30% said AI makes it an even more valuable skill to have. Better yet, about two in three coders (68%) have seen a tangible result from learning to code, from new job prospects to projects they built themselves.
What Keeps People Coding When Confidence Runs Low
What pushes people out of coding usually has less to do with talent and more to do with how it feels to learn the skill. Comparison, the fear of starting too late, and second-guessing in the face of AI do more to undercut confidence than any single bug.
But most coders say the effort is worth it. Most who step away come back, and the feeling of being behind turns out to be something nearly everyone shares. In June 2026, we surveyed 510 American coders, including beginners, career switchers, students, professionals, and people who have stepped away, to explore the emotional journey of learning to code: when confidence is built, when it breaks, and how AI is reshaping it. The average age was 36; 61% of the participants were male, 33% were female, and 5% preferred not to say or self-described. Generationally, 4% were baby boomers, 16% were Gen X, 51% were millennials, and 30% were Gen Z.
