Double and Triple Bonds
Part of the Structure and Bonding section of Coddy's Chemistry journey. Lesson 11 of 49.
Two shared pairs make a double bond; three make a triple bond.
CO₂: two double bonds
Use them when single bonds leave an atom short of 8: move a lone pair into a bond.
N₂ and HCN have triple bonds. Triple bonds are the shortest and strongest.
N₂ and HCN: triple bonds
Challenge
Carbon dioxide is the gas plants take in. Draw its Lewis structure.
