Recap - Pigments and Hexane
Part of the Structure and Bonding section of Coddy's Chemistry journey. Lesson 47 of 49.
Challenge
Spinach leaves hold several colored pigments. Carotene, the orange one, is a long chain of carbon and hydrogen atoms with no polar groups. A student wants a solvent that dissolves carotene but not the water-loving pigments, and considers hexane and tetrachloromethane, CCl₄.
Like dissolves like: a non-polar pigment dissolves in a non-polar solvent. Decide whether CCl₄ is a polar molecule, and name the strongest force between its molecules.
