Sharing Electrons
Part of the Structure and Bonding section of Coddy's Chemistry journey. Lesson 8 of 49.
Non-metals share electron pairs. A shared pair is a covalent bond, drawn as a line.
H₂ and Cl₂: one shared pair each
Hydrogen is full with 2 electrons; most other atoms with 8 (the octet).
Pairs not shared are lone pairs, drawn as dots. Bonded atoms make a molecule.
Challenge
Chlorine gas is made of Cl₂ molecules. Draw its Lewis structure: the bond and every lone pair.
Try it yourself
This lesson includes a short quiz. Start the lesson to answer it and track your progress.
