Bolts

Lesson 9 of 20 in Coddy's Pygame Project: Hold the Keep course.

The knight's first weapon fires by itself: every 30 frames a magic bolt flies at the nearest monster. To find the nearest, keep the best one seen so far and compare each monster with it:

def nearest(self):
    point = pygame.Vector2(self.knight.rect.center)
    best = None
    for monster in self.monsters:
        if best is None or point.distance_to(monster.pos) < point.distance_to(best.pos):
            best = monster
    return best

A bolt is a sprite that flies in a straight line. It works out its direction once, when it is made, like a monster's step, and keeps it: velocity = step.normalize() * 7. When it leaves the screen it removes itself with self.kill(), which takes a sprite out of every Group it is in.

A timer counts frames since the last bolt. When it reaches the knight's bolt_wait and there is a target, fire and set it back to 0. Waiting like this between uses is called a cooldown.

Challenge

Medium
  1. Add BOLT = (120, 200, 255). Give the knight bolt_wait = 30 and bolt_damage = 1.
  2. Write class Bolt(pygame.sprite.Sprite): __init__(self, start, target, damage) keeps pos, velocity (7 pixels a frame toward the target), damage and a 10 by 10 rect; update moves it and kills it once its rect is off the screen.
  3. In Night: self.bolts = pygame.sprite.Group(), self.bolt_timer = 0, nearest() and shoot(). In update call self.bolts.update() after the monsters move, then self.shoot().
  4. Draw each bolt last in the courtyard: pygame.draw.circle(screen, BOLT, bolt.rect.center, 5).
