Level Up

Lesson 14 of 20 in Coddy's Pygame Project: Hold the Keep course.

Five gems make a level. Each level asks for 4 more gems than the last, so the knight grows quickly at first and then more slowly:

if self.xp >= self.need:
    self.xp -= self.need
    self.level += 1
    self.need += 4
    self.state = "levelup"

A level up pauses the game: the loop updates only while "playing", so in "levelup" nothing moves. Space goes back to the night. Read Space as an event, pygame.KEYDOWN, not with get_pressed: one press is one choice, however long the key is held.

A Surface made with pygame.SRCALPHA can be see-through. Filled with (0, 0, 0, 150), black at 150 of 255, it dims the game behind the message. Make it once, before the loop, and only blit it in the loop: a new window-sized Surface every frame is a lot of memory to throw away 60 times a second.

The xp bar shows how close the next level is: 150 pixels wide when full, so 150 * night.xp // night.need pixels of gold.

Challenge

Medium
  1. Add GOLD = (250, 200, 60) and level_sound = sound("powerup.ogg"). Give Night level = 1 and need = 5.
  2. At the end of collect, level up as above and play level_sound.
  3. In the event loop, on pygame.KEYDOWN: in "levelup", Space sets night.state = "playing".
  4. Top right: f"Level {night.level}" with its top right corner at (710, 4), and the bar: (40, 40, 60) at (WIDTH - 160, 30, 150, 10), then the gold part, 150 * night.xp // night.need wide.
  5. Before the loop make cover, a window-sized SRCALPHA Surface filled with (0, 0, 0, 150). In "levelup" blit it, then "Level up!" in gold big letters at (360, 200), and "Press Space to keep going" at (360, 260).
