Admin Roles

Part of the Auth and Security section of Coddy's Node.js journey. Lesson 14 of 17.

GET /admin only checks that someone is logged in, so every member sees it. A role stored on the user, like 'member' or 'admin', says what they may do. A middleware factory, a function that returns a middleware, checks one role per route:

function requirePlan(plan) {
    return (req, res, next) => {
        if (req.user.plan !== plan) {
            return res.status(402).json({ error: `Needs the ${plan} plan` });
        }
        next();
    };
}

app.get('/exports', requireUser, requirePlan('pro'), sendExports);

A role is always set by the server. Signup copies only the fields it expects from req.body, so a visitor who sends "role": "admin" gets nothing from it.

Challenge

Easy
  • Signup stores role: 'member', whatever the body says.
  • Write requireRole(role): 403 { "error": "Not allowed" } unless req.user.role matches. GET /admin uses requireRole('admin') after requireUser.

Sign up with "role": "admin" and send GET /admin. Then log in as admin with admin-pass-for-tests, the ADMIN_PASSWORD.
