Input Is Hostile
Part of the Auth and Security section of Coddy's Node.js journey. Lesson 17 of 17.
Anything a client sends may be written by an attacker. A body of 50 MB ties up your memory. A note holding <script> runs as code in the browser of whoever views it: that is cross-site scripting, XSS.
Limit what you accept: every Express body parser takes a limit, and a larger body answers 413 Payload Too Large before your route runs. Store the text exactly as sent, and escape it when you put it in HTML, so the browser shows the characters instead of running them. html.js gives you escapeHtml.
app.use(express.urlencoded({ limit: '2kb' }));
escapeHtml('<img src=x onerror=steal()>');
// '<img src=x onerror=steal()>'Challenge
Easy- A JSON body over 10 KB answers 413.
- The page
GET /escapes each note's text and your username.
Add a note with the text <script>alert('hi')</script> and send GET /. Then send a note over 10 KB.
