Prime Polynomials

Not everything factors. x^2 + x + 1: pairs of 1 are just 1 and 1, summing to 2, not 1. The list is complete, so no whole-number factoring exists. Such a polynomial is called prime, like a prime number: no smaller pieces.
x^2 + 100 is prime too. It LOOKS like the special shape, but the sign is wrong: a SUM of squares, and the sum-times-difference split needs the minus. The pairs of +100 with sum 0 do not exist.
Prime is an answer, not a failure. When the hunt exhausts its complete list, write the expression unchanged and move on with confidence. Knowing that nothing was missed is exactly what the systematic list is for.
