Broadcast Address

Lesson 20 of 46 in Coddy's IP Addressing and Subnetting course.

The other reserved address sits at the far end: the broadcast address, with all host bits set to 1. A packet sent there reaches every machine in the subnet at once.

The quick way to find it: network address plus block size minus one. The subnet 192.168.4.64/28 holds 16 addresses, so its broadcast is 64 + 16 - 1 = 192.168.4.79.

Network and broadcast are the bookends of every subnet. Everything between them is available for machines.
