Four Octets
Lesson 5 of 46 in Coddy's IP Addressing and Subnetting course.
An IPv4 address is 32 bits, but nobody wants to read 32 bits in a row. So we chop it into four bytes, called octets, convert each to decimal, and join them with dots: 192.168.1.1. That format is called dotted decimal.
The dots are purely for humans. To the network, 192.168.1.1 is one continuous binary number: 11000000 10101000 00000001 00000001.
Because each octet is one byte, every octet runs from 0 to 255. You will never see 300 in a real address.
