The Desert Gate

Lesson 15 of 18 in Coddy's Roblox Game: Pet Simulator course.

The red wall at the back is the gate to the Desert, with an "Unlock" prompt. Paying Settings.GatePrice should open it, but only for the player who paid.

That needs both sides. The server takes the coins and records the unlock as an attribute on the player, Desert, which every rule can check. The client watches that attribute and opens the gate on its own screen: in Roblox each player's device moves their own character, so a wall a LocalScript makes non-solid lets that player through while it stays solid for everyone else.

-- client
workspace.Gate.CanCollide = false
workspace.Gate.Transparency = 0.7

Hiding the gate's prompt the same way keeps it from offering a second unlock.

Challenge

Hard
  1. In PetServer, connect workspace.Gate.ProximityPrompt.Triggered: stop if the player already has the Desert attribute or has fewer coins than Settings.GatePrice; otherwise take the price and set the player's Desert attribute to true.
  2. In PetClient, write openGate(): if the player's Desert attribute is set, make the gate CanCollide false, Transparency 0.7 and its prompt Enabled false. Call it now and when the attribute changes.

Press Play, earn 100 coins and unlock the Desert. Then Check.
