Aggregation Pipelines
Part of the Databases with MongoDB section of Coddy's Node.js journey. Lesson 13 of 18.
A "top rated" list needs averages, a minimum number of ratings, an order and a cut. Each of those is a stage.
$match keeps the documents that pass a filter, like find. $sort and $limit work as they do on a cursor, and $avg averages a field inside $group. Stages run in the order you write them, and each one sees only what the stage before it passed on, so a $match after $group filters the groups.
await orders.aggregate([
{ $match: { status: 'paid' } },
{ $group: { _id: '$customer', spent: { $sum: '$total' } } },
{ $sort: { spent: -1 } },
{ $limit: 5 },
]).toArray();Unlike a cursor, a pipeline keeps your order: $limit before $sort keeps any five, then sorts those.
Challenge
EasyGET /stats/topanswers the 3 books with the highest average stars, best first, each as{ "_id": <bookId>, "avg": 4.5, "count": 2 }.- A book needs at least 2 ratings to be listed.
Rate a few books as two users, then send GET /stats/top.
