Joining with $lookup
Part of the Databases with MongoDB section of Coddy's Node.js journey. Lesson 14 of 18.
A book stores its author's name, and the author's details live in another collection. The client wants both in one answer.
The $lookup stage joins. For each document, it finds the documents in the from collection whose foreignField equals this document's localField, and puts them in a new array field named by as.
await orders.aggregate([
{ $match: { _id: orderId } },
{ $lookup: {
from: 'customers',
localField: 'customerEmail',
foreignField: 'email',
as: 'customer',
} },
]).toArray();
// [{ _id: ..., customerEmail: 'ada@x.io', customer: [{ email: 'ada@x.io', ... }] }]localField belongs to the documents in the pipeline, foreignField to the other collection. The result is an array, even for one match.
Challenge
Easy- Seed an
authorscollection at start-up withauthorListfromauthors.js. GET /books/:id/fullanswers the book with anauthorInfoarray holding its author, matched by name. An unknown id answers404.
Send it for Dune, then look at authors in the Data tab.
