Deleting Documents

Part of the Databases with MongoDB section of Coddy's Node.js journey. Lesson 8 of 18.

Removing a book takes one call, but the server still has to tell the client whether there was a book to remove.

deleteOne(filter) removes the first matching document and answers { deletedCount }: 1 when it removed one, 0 when nothing matched. A successful delete answers 204 No Content, a status that has no body, sent with res.status(204).end().

const result = await sessions.deleteOne({ token });
if (result.deletedCount === 0) {
    // no session had that token
}

Deleting the same id twice should not succeed twice. The second time nothing is left, and the client should hear 404.

Challenge

Easy
  • DELETE /books/:id removes the book and answers 204 with no body.
  • An unknown id answers 404, so a second DELETE of the same book does too.

Delete a book, send the same DELETE again, then look at the Data tab.
