Flash and Count Up

Part of the Sound and Game Feel section of Coddy's Pygame journey. Lesson 23 of 23.

Two last touches. When the player loses a life, the whole screen flashes red for a moment, so the loss is impossible to miss. When they score, the number counts up instead of jumping.

The red flash is a Surface the size of the window, filled red and made see-through with set_alpha(), from 0 (invisible) to 255 (solid). Make it once, before the loop:

red = pygame.Surface((640, 480))
red.fill((255, 0, 0))
red.set_alpha(90)

A life lost sets flash = 12. Each frame counts it down, and while it is above 0 the game blits red over the world, before the text.

For the score, keep a second number, shown_score, and ease it toward the real one each frame:

shown_score += (score - shown_score) * 0.2

Draw round(shown_score). The game still decides everything with score; only the display eases. That is the rule for all of this chapter's polish: it changes what the player sees and hears, never the rules.

Challenge

Medium
  1. Before the loop: flash = 0, the red Surface with alpha 90, and shown_score = 0.
  2. Set flash = 12 in both places a life is lost.
  3. Next to explosions.update(): lower flash by 1 while it is above 0, and ease shown_score toward score by 0.2.
  4. After blitting the world, blit red at (0, 0) while flash is above 0.
  5. Show Score: {round(shown_score)} instead of the score.
