Shake on Impact
Part of the Sound and Game Feel section of Coddy's Pygame journey. Lesson 22 of 23.
Now the shake. A laser hit adds a little, shake = min(shake + 6, 15), so a chain of kills stays readable. A crash costs a life and should be felt more: it sets shake = 15.
To shake, the game draws on a world Surface and blits it at an offset, as in the crate demo:
world.fill((12, 14, 30))
enemies.draw(world)
# ... the ship, lasers, explosions and sparks on world too
offset = (0, 0)
if shake > 0:
amount = shake // 3
offset = (random.randint(-amount, amount), random.randint(-amount, amount))
shake -= 1
screen.fill((0, 0, 0))
screen.blit(world, offset)Only the playfield goes on the world. The score, lives and wave are drawn on the screen after the blit, so they stay put and readable while everything else jolts.
Challenge
Medium- Before the loop, make
world = pygame.Surface((640, 480))andshake = 0. - Where a laser destroys an enemy, add
shake = min(shake + 6, 15). Where an enemy crashes into the ship, setshake = 15. - Draw the background fill, the sprites, the explosions and the sparks on
worldinstead ofscreen. - Then pick the offset as shown, fill the screen black and blit
worldat the offset. Keep the text after it, on the screen.
