Three Lives

Part of the Sprites and Images section of Coddy's Pygame journey. Lesson 35 of 36.

Now the game can be lost. The ship has three lives. An enemy costs one when it gets past the bottom, and one when it crashes into the ship:

crashes = pygame.sprite.spritecollide(player, enemies, True, pygame.sprite.collide_mask)
for enemy in crashes:
    lives -= 1
    explosions.add(Explosion(enemy.rect.center))

The ship needs a self.mask too. In the loop that kills enemies past the bottom, take a life as well.

When lives reaches 0, the game stops: put the whole update part, from player.update() to the crashes, under if lives > 0:, and show Game over in the middle. Keep explosions.update() outside it, so the last blast still plays out.

Two enemies could take the last two lives in the same frame, leaving lives at -1. Show max(lives, 0), the larger of the two numbers, so the counter never reads below 0.

Challenge

Medium
  1. Make lives = 3 and give Player a self.mask.
  2. An enemy past the bottom takes a life. An enemy touching the ship, tested with collide_mask, is killed, takes a life and explodes.
  3. Put the update part under if lives > 0:.
  4. Draw Lives: and max(lives, 0) with its top right corner at (630, 10), and Game over centred at (320, 240) once lives <= 0.
